Breeding -- The special case of the Bunny and Pig
=================================================

First of all, I must remind you -- please, please, _please_ keep
backup copies of any pets that you intend to edit, or indeed of any
pets at all that are in the game! Disasters can happen, although I've
not personally had any problems with the procedures and files mentioned
here.

Editing the .pet file to un-spay the pet
----------------------------------------

As with other spayed pets, it is possible to "un-spay" any pig or bunny
pets which were adopted from the original P.F.Magic Petz 4 breedfiles.

What you need to look for when un-neutering a pet, is one byte which is
set to "01" when it needs to be "00". Look for YALP

It will look like this:

For female un-neutered

00021808 | 702E 662E 6D61 6769 6370 6574 7A49 4949 | p.f.magicpetzIII
00021824 | 0001 0000 0001 0000 0059 414C 501E 0000 | .........YALP...

For male un-neutered

00021808 | 702E 662E 6D61 6769 6370 6574 7A49 4949 | p.f.magicpetzIII
00021824 | 0000 0000 0001 0000 0059 414C 501E 0000 | .........YALP...

For female neutered

00021808 | 702E 662E 6D61 6769 6370 6574 7A49 4949 | p.f.magicpetzIII
00021824 | 0001 0100 0001 0000 0059 414C 501E 0000 | .........YALP...

For male neutered

00021808 | 702E 662E 6D61 6769 6370 6574 7A49 4949 | p.f.magicpetzIII
00021824 | 0000 0100 0001 0000 0059 414C 501E 0000 | .........YALP...

So, it's all in those 4 bytes directly after the III. If the second byte
is 01 (looking in the hexadecimal numbers section), it's a female; if 00,
a male. If the third byte is 01, it's spayed; if 00, not spayed. You can
of course change these. But this is a petfile, so you have to keep the
checksum the same. What you can do is scroll up until you get to the
text/numbers data, where there are a bunch of Paint Ballz numbers, and
reduce or increase a number there by the amount you increased or decreased
the bytes in the neuter/gender area.

Adopting un-spayed bunnies and pigz
-----------------------------------

Whiskers of Whiskers's Petz Sites discovered that you can in fact alter the
pig.dog and bunny.cat breedfiles so that all adopted pets will not be neutered.
The key is in the section of the breedfile where we have the unique ID (what
we all call the "offset byte"). In the pig, for instance, it looks like this:

00060352 | 0000 0000 5769 6C62 7572 0000 0000 0000 | ....Wilbur......
00060368 | 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 | ................
00060384 | 0000 0000 FC03 0000 1900 0000 0000 0000 | ................

Three bytes after the offset number (FC03) there is the number 19. Change that
to 01, and the breedfile will no longer "spay" pets.

Breeding with your unspayed pets
--------------------------------

Bunnies and pigs are a little more complicated to breed from than other pets.
Unspayed ones are perfectly capable of breeding, but there is a quirk which makes it
necessary to juggle things a bit. I repeat, this juggling is only needed for
the P4 and P5 bunnies and pigs; there is no problem with breeding from other petfiles,
which were spayed and have been unspayed, of any different species for Petz 3, 4 or 5.

First off, it doesn't look as though they will actually breed with the default
bunny file; I might be wrong about that, but I suspect that the file simply has
missing the necessary behaviour for breeding. Certainly, I have now spent a long
time testing, with two bunnies who were very fond of each other but couldn't keep
properly focussed on each other when the bunny file was in place, but who went
through the correct behaviours very fast when I substituted a renamed and slightly
altered version of one of my own bunny-type files (the cotton bunny).

Secondly, they need the "offset byte" of the relevant breedfile to be FFFF, not
the usual bunny's number FD03. Similarly, non-spayed pigs adopted from the
P.F.Magic pig.dog file need FFFF instead of FC03. Please note that you probably
can't have FFFF versions of both breedfiles in the game at once.

I have now made a breedfile which contains all the Bunny original breed information,
including furfiles, but has the normal cat behaviour section that I believe is needed
and also has the FFFF number. This results in the loving pair of pets going through
their normal courtship procedure and announcing a happy event; I've tested this
throroughly over the past couple of days, and there have been no problems with my
game or pets.

So to get the maximum enjoyment from playing with and breeding from your own bunniez,
use the default file so you can have them hop about and behave like bunnies until
you want them to breed. Then take the breedfile that I have made (included in the
zipfile with this information) and put it in place of the original. The couple will
then go through the courtship process and announce a happy event. You need to keep
the FFFF file in place until the baby is born. You can use the original again then
if you wish, but will need to have my version in place when the baby is due to come
out separately from its mother. After that you can go back to using the original
until you want to breed bunniez again :-)

Enjoy!

Carolyn
